Yesterday was monumental. And by monumental, I’m not really sure if I mean it’s memorable or traumatic. So maybe monumental’s not the correct term? Sheesh. Whatever.

My Saturday night — typically spent indoors — was indeed spent indoors, but with kink. Oh, how I wish it was that kind of kink, but unfortunately, it wasn’t. Going back, I did spend my Saturday night indoors — within the office premises.

[No] Thanks to Typhoon Ondoy.

Yeah, you guessed it. I, along with a bunch of people at work, was stranded in the office. Since it kept on pouring, South Luzon Expressway was eventually temporarily closed. And I wouldn’t blame whoever called for it, because there was no way for traffic to run smoothly along waist-deep flood waters.

What a calamity indeed. Plurks and Yahoo! status message updates kept popping out of nowhere. Every status update had something to do with how the flood was barging into homes like an unwanted guest. I feel so sorry for the critical areas wherein people actually had to literally stand on roofs. Until now, I can’t help but wonder, how does one prioritize the “important” stuff in times like these. Food? Valuables? You can only bring so much, especially if you’re watching over other people too.

I know I have a lot of things to be thankful for. Allow me to mention some of them:

1. Unionbank Plaza was in a floodless area – this gave us the freedom to walk to nearby open food establishments.
2. Unionbank Plaza had a convenience store at the ground level – this gave us the temporary solution to our necessities, since the nearby malls had to close early. When the wind was still blowing mercilessly outside, this provided our sustenance: hotdog on stick and no-cook noodles. Good thing our office had free-flowing water and soda as well!
3. Unionbank Plaza had backup power source – while other people were worrying about having their cell phone batteries drained, I was charging my phone and watching “Take Care Of Agasshi” and “1D/2N” (I just really had to put that in. Sorry! ^^)

Thank God my family was all right.

But here’s a very valuable lesson learned: The next time I wake up to see rain pouring heavily nonstop and I think, “Should I still go to work”, I’m caving in. Php1000 isn’t that much compared to the comfort of being able to sleep in my own bed and knowing my family isn’t worrying about me.
